How to identify and avoid the 3 costly mistakes your business is making on social media

It’s 2017 and if your business is not on Social Media, you’re missing out.

However, there is a lot more that goes into having your brand on social media. That’s why we created this short guide to help you avoid common mistakes that are made by businesses on social media.

Mistake #1. Not having a social media strategy

This is the BIGGEST mistake businesses make when they decide to be on social media.

Social media just like any other marketing channel, is a platform that must be approached carefully.

I am pretty sure you had a plan before you started your business, well the same goes for social media. You must have a clear and detailed plan so as to know what you would like to achieve through social media.

The strategy should answer the following questions:

  • Why do you want to be on social media? (Objective e.g. Build brand awareness)
  • Who is your target audience? (Will help you know which channels to pick e.g. if you’re targeting a millennials that around 18- 30, Instagram would be the best platform.
  • Where are they located? (Social channels to use)
  • What are your competitors using?
  • How will you measure the result? (e.g. if your objective is to build brand awareness, you would measure it by monitoring your likes and follower numbers)

I like to think of a social media strategy as the map that lets you know how you’ll get to the treasure. That’s why it is extremely key to do this before you set up your social media presence.

Not only does it save you time but it will also save you money in the event you decide to pay for advertising.

You might be thinking, but, I’m already on social media does this apply to me too? If you did not have a social media strategy, now would be a good time to sit down and create one.

Mistake #2.Consistency, or rather Lack of it

Okay, so you’ve decided that social media is where you’d like to market your products and engage with your customers and you’ve created a page. What next?

It’s not enough to be on social media and expect that people will come to you. You have to post, not once or twice a month but consistently.

A consistent page is one that has a frequent posts however this does not mean that you post for the sake of posting. The key is to ensure that whatever you post is of high value and relevant to your brand voice.

Remember, everything you post is a reflection of your brand. Always keep that in mind.

Mistake #3. Not being creative enough

Creativity is the key.

Companies that are killing it on social media are the ones that have found a creative way to post about their content. There is so much noise on social media that if you expect to cut through it without being creative then you’re in for a long struggle.

People are attracted to content they can relate to that’s why knowing your brand voice is extremely important. Your brand voice will determine what kind of content you put out. A good example of this is Urban Gourmet Burger. They have a humorous ring to most posts they put out and tend to use a lot of puns. This resonates with their fans as they are able to appreciate the humor whilst still getting the message about why they should have a meal at Urban Gourmet.

The key thing is that once you know what your brand voice is, you have to remain consistent and authentic to your brand.

One last tip, you should either have a social media manager or have a social media team that will be solely in charge of your social media. The good thing is that it can either be in house or outsourced.

Regardless of whichever you choose, ensure that you have someone that is in charge of this. It may cost you however in the long run, it will be extremely beneficial to you.

P.S. Don’t pick anyone just because they are on social media, ensure that the person you select is passionate about social media marketing and is conversant with the social media platforms that you would like to be on.
